GS1 Hackathon 2020: “Boosting radically honest products with AI and data”

GS1 in Europe is organizing its first Hackathon, co-hosted by GS1 Germany and atrify!
Current worldwide problems like global warming, scarcity of raw resources and social responsibility are very real and are changing the way people consume and engage with products.
Consumers want to be more aware of how their patterns of consumption might make a difference and they are demanding radically honest - transparent and sustainable - products from producers. This poses an opportunity for producers to engage in completely different ways with their consumers.
The aim of the hackathon is to support the consumer to discover better and more mindful products ("radically honest") with the help of AI and data sources.
This Hackathon will focus on three main topics:
Which should be solved using the following technologies:
- Computer Vision/AR/VR
- Data mining
- Cloud technologies
atrify and Auto-ID Lab will provide access to data and support for Google Cloud Platform technologies and usage costs.
In the Prototyping stream, you will develop a real AI-powered solution. The result could be for example: an App, a Website, a Jupyter Notebook, an API.
In the Concept Stream, each group delivers a finished concept. The result can be the development of an idea or the implementation concept of an idea.
GS1 employees who do not want to participate in the hackathon but want to support the event can join the organizational team. You should note this in the registration.
You may ask: Why is GS1 hosting such a Hackathon? GS1 is a not for profit standards organization, most well-known for our best seller: “The Barcode”. With it, digitalizing product information became fairly easy, and standardizing product-related Information became our daily business. Our Standards pave the road for interoperability in a very complex ecosystem made of thousands of different suppliers and retailers. We’re keen on learning what AI means for the future of products, and we would love to develop solutions together with YOU!
This is why GS1 partnered with atrify and Auto-ID Lab (Zürich) to organize this Hackathon with us.
atrify has a huge database of high-quality product data. atrify is the platform for product content that enables more than 20,000 users in over 50 countries to share accurate and reliable content with their partners and consumers. The Auto-ID Lab based at ETH Zurich and at the University of St. Gallen conducts research in the field of next generation Internet of Things technologies that will revolutionize interfaces between users and objects. Our current research focus in our Swiss lab includes digital receipts, computer vision-based detection of products, industrial and consumer IOT. Around the globe, the Auto ID Labs are an independent network of currently seven academic research labs that research and develop new technologies for revolutionizing global commerce and providing previously un-realizable consumer benefits.
